The Thrill of ATV Racing

I can smell it now, the oh so sweet smell of high octane race fuel. The sound of chest pounding four stroke engines rumbles through the pits. The excitement of the racers is showcased on the track as they battle for the win. Sailing 30ft in the air over massive man made dirt jumps. Busting berms and block passing for the win. ATV motocross is one of the most rising motor sports of our time.

This sport is beginning to become more popular than dirt bike racing. There are many series to choose from when it comes to racing motocross. Classes range from quads as small as 50cc’s all the way up to the open class where engines can be 650cc’s. The most popular engine size being 450cc’s. This is the engine size permitted in the pro class and is where almost all riders strive to be in.

There are many different types of man made obstacles on a motocross track.

These include massive doubles, triples, tabletops and whoops. The tracks can get extremely rough during the course of the day. This is caused by breaking bumps and acceleration bumps from the riders going in and out of the corners. The quads used in the pro class are heavily modified with aftermarket suspension and engine components to handle the rough conditions of a motocross track. Custom Axis, Elka and Fox are among the top choices in shock absorbers for the pro class. This shock has sophisticated valving that allows it to soak up the biggest bumps on the track and still be able to absorb the impact of casing out a double jump. The quads are also widened to 50 inches to prevent tipping in high speed cornering.

If you are looking for a more smoother racing experience then you need to check out extreme dirt track racing.

This type of racing is done on a hard packed flat dirt track similar to sprint car racing.

The racers use modified quads and focus more getting through the turns and down the straights as fast as possible. They can reach speeds of 70 mph+ depending on track conditions. The same engine sizes are used in this form of racing as in motocross racing. The classes are also very similar but they can be separated depending on what type of tires you are running. American racer and Hoosier tires are one of the most popular choices. These tires have many grooves cut into them allowing the tread to flex giving the rider much more traction on the hard pack surface than a traditional knobby tire found on most sport quads. Front anit-sway bars are also a very popular modification for this type of racing. This mechanism is used to synchronize the front tires so that the quad handles much more precisely. This allows the racer to go much more faster around the the track.

Both types of racing are very enjoyable to watch and race in. Some racers prefer to stick to one of the other while some do both. In the earliest days of the GNC riders would race in both flat track and motocross and there would be one crowned champion. In the early 2000′s the series were split due to more rider’s joining the series and it made each event more competitive as there would be dedicated rider’s in each series.

Not all ATV’s are made equal, especially nowadays when there are as many different types of ATV’s as there are ATV trails. You have 4 wheel drive utility type ATV’s to rigid suspension racing 4 wheelers.

Four wheel drive utility quads are the perfect match for muddy terrains, but it is highly recommended that you have skid plates installed. The heavier weight of these types of ATV’s with locking differentials will let you sling mud and basically grab onto just about anything.

Another type of ATV that fits some personalities are sport racing style ATV’s. Now don’t be mistaken sport style ATV’s can hold their own in mud, but are not the first choice for deep mud holes. Speed will help crossing over some mud holes which fit the sport bikes to a T, although stopping in the middle will find yourself pulling out with a wench.

Another type of terrain that is typically encountered is sandy trails, especially the sand found in and around creek beds.

Usually traction is good in sand dunes although unpacked sand is going to be a problem for most 4 wheelers, unless you are an experienced rider. In looser types of sand a sport bike will be the prevailing choice, with the lighter weight and the advantage of speed. Utility type quads and there heavier weight will usually sink in loose sand. Whether you have a utility or sport style ATV speed will be your savior when crossing sand.

Discussions and debates among your riding friends will be varied as to what makes a riding trail great. Some people will enjoy mostly level trails with a few hills and ditches thrown in. Others will enjoy slinging mud, jumping through the air or crawling up bluffs.

It really doesn’t matter what type of trails that you think is the best, what matters is that you are prepared to match your type of ATV to the type of trails that you will be riding on to maximize your fun.

Matching the trail type to your ATV will showcase your quads strengths instead of bringing out it’s weaknesses.

An Overview on ATV Accessories

It is understandable that All-Terrain Vehicles or ATV for short have a number of usages. On one hand where an ATV can be a competing vehicle in a bumpy off-road racing event; on the other, it can be a workhorse for an expedition team making their way through the rough terrains of The Himalayas. Hence, it becomes safe to say that ATV accessories vary as per their usage and you need to know the different types of accessory options available in the market in order to buy suitable ones.

To begin with, these accessories can be broadly classified into three categories; safety, navigation and survival. Now, here you need to know that there is simply no reasonable debate to decide which category is the most important. All types play their unique role and hence have their unique significance. Therefore, when you are buying accessories for your prized possession, always ensure that you have covered the four stated categories.

Let’s have a look at some of the prominent options from these three segments.

When it comes to safety accessories, some of the most popular accessories include driving goggles, helmets, driver body pads, protective apparel, and the likes. These accessories not only ensure your personal safety, they also improve the quality of your overall ride. No matter what is the usage of the ATV you have in mind, always ensure that you have all the recommended safety gear. You can also go for ranger doors and guards to add more safety to your ride.

Moving further, navigation ATV accessories are a remarkable solution for ensuring that your ATV is always on track.

Thanks to the technological advancements that led to the development of satellite controlled Global Positioning System, getting lost in an unknown land has become a whole lot more difficult. Navigation accessories such as GPS, compass, etc. are particularly important for those who use their ATVs for expeditions and nature trips.

Last but not the least comes survival ATV accessories. These accessories are a must have for every ATV as the only way to deal with any unpleasant scenario is by being prepared to handle it. Hence, always ensure that your ATV has necessary survival accessories such as first aid kid, fire extinguisher, life jacket, toolkit, and the likes. Being unprepared to handle emergencies will not only result in delay in your journey, they can very well prove to be fatal. Remember, prevention is better than cure.

ATV Riding and the Environment

As you know, riding an ATV is fun, no wait, it’s a lot of fun. Of course you know that safety is one of the biggest concerns for ATV riders, but another concern that we should never forget about is the potential dangerous effects that riding can have on the environment. It’s important to be respectful at all times while riding-respect the potential dangers of the ride, respect other riders, and respect the lands and trails on which you ride.

It’s important to stay on marked trails, and resist the urge to pioneer a new trail. Many ATV trails are strategically well maintained-only allowing riders on one area of a trail, and occasionally closing the trail, and opening a new area. This trail rotation is done to allow the land/trail to heal itself naturally, and provide good trails on a long term basis.

You must learn proper ATV handling techniques to handle some of the terrain you will see.

Many riders that don’t have a lot of experience can tear up the land when trying to navigate hills, or crossing streams and creeks. Often these inappropriate techniques are also safety hazards. For example some inexperienced riders try to tackle hills by going sideways, which can damage the land, but also puts you in danger of having your vehicle tip over.

Many tips and suggestions are common sense, but they can’t be emphasized enough:

Only ride in areas open to ATVs.
Drive over obstacles (slowly), to prevent widening the trail, and perhaps causing damage to the land.
Cross streams and creeks only at spots that are marked
Avoid muddy trails. If you cannot avoid muddy sections-don’t go around them, drive through them carefully so your wheels aren’t spinning and tearing up the earth.
Always comply with posted signs
Always ride with at least one other person

These are good starting points for beginners.

Remember that ATV safety recommendations are not just for people, but also in place for the environment. Enjoy your riding season-be safe, be smart, and have fun.

Insuring Your Snowmobile and ATV

Hitting the trails on your snowmobile or riding through rough terrain on your all-terrain vehicle (ATV) may seem like all fun and games. But snowmobiles and ATVs can be dangerous, so you’ll want to make sure that you’re properly insured before you use them.

What is a snowmobile?

A snowmobile is a motor vehicle that operates on ice and snow, using steerable skis in the front and a track system in the back.

What is an ATV?

An ATV is a small motor vehicle with three or four wheels that operates on various types of terrain.

Do you need to purchase snowmobile or ATV insurance?

It depends. Most homeowners policies specifically exclude snowmobiles from physical damage and liability coverage. As for ATVs, they may be covered to some extent under your homeowners policy.

In general, homeowners policies provide some protection to vehicles that don’t need to be registered, especially if the vehicles are used to service the property (e.g., riding mowers). You’ll want to purchase enough snowmobile or ATV insurance to adequately cover you for physical damage and liability claims.

What is covered under a typical snowmobile or ATV insurance policy?

Similar to your auto insurance policy, snowmobile and ATV insurance typically provides coverage for both physical damage and liability claims. The physical damage portion of a snowmobile or ATV policy usually pays to repair or replace the vehicle if it is damaged. The liability claims portion of the policy usually provides coverage for injury to others or damage to their property. Liability coverage should protect both you and a guest driving with your permission, but check your policy to be sure.

You can also purchase additional options such as uninsured/underinsured motorists, medical payments, accessory, and trailer coverage.

Where can you purchase snowmobile and ATV insurance?

Although some of the larger insurance companies offer insurance coverage for recreational vehicles, a number of insurers are beginning to specialize in policies geared specifically toward snowmobiles and ATVs. Check with your insurance agent, surf the Internet, or consult your local snowmobile or ATV association for more information on companies that offer these types of policies.

How much does snowmobile and ATV insurance cost?

In most cases, it should be less expensive to insure your snowmobile or ATV than to insure your automobile. The cost of snowmobile and ATV insurance varies, depending on several factors. These factors may include the insurance company, your driving record, the make and model of your snowmobile or ATV, your completion of safety courses, and your experience driving the vehicle. However, many insurance companies offer discounts for multiple vehicles, experienced drivers, snowmobile or ATV association members, and so on. Some insurers even offer more affordable seasonal coverage. So, it pays to shop around.

All About ATV Riding Gear

An ATV is something that is aptly named for its purpose. It is a short form of All Terrain Vehicle. This means exactly what it says, it means that at ATV can ride in all types of terrains unlike a car that would get stuck in water or loose sand and couldn’t get out. An ATV is also the vehicle of choice for extreme vehicle sports and can easily catch up to very high speeds, making it ideal for dirt racing.

All terrain vehicles are also quite dangerous as they are not enclosed and do not have a cabin like a sedan. They are open and the rider is exposed. This makes it possible for the rider to escape grievous injuries and jump off the vehicle when dangerous conditions arise. This also exposes to a lot of minor injuries that can happen which would be prevented if the all terrain vehicle had been closed.

All in all, it provides and exhilarating ride at the cost of some of the safety and is definitely one of the best ways to enjoy the real freedom of not being confined to drive on the road.

Some of the equipment that is necessary to ride on the all terrain vehicle safely includes a helmet, joint pads and gloves. These are vital things to ensure that a person who is riding the all terrain vehicle is not completely exposed and all injuries that can happen from falling off are minimized.

An ATV should never be ridden without a helmet and gloves and joint pads as these are the only things that are sources of protection against injuries from falls that can be sustained while riding an ATV.

Atv Wheels For Outdoor Adventures
ATV wheels are an important part of the ATV experience as you want the right wheels for the courses that you are going on. You can buy these wheels at a store that sells ATV equipment or you can find the wheels online or in a catalog for ATV parts. The vehicles are little as compared to a car or even some motorcycles and need the right wheels to function properly and for safety purposes, as well. Since they are little they can oftentimes go out in the wilderness or areas that a car or motorcycle may not be able to go into safely. If they have the wrong wheels they risk being unsafe and getting damaged, as well.

Take time to look at different websites and what they mention as the choices for the trips you are planning on taking.

The ATV has gained huge popularity because of its versatility. It is included in many different outdoor activities like racing, hunting and camping. This has made way for many customizable features that you can add to your ATV.

Racing ATVs look very different from conventional ATVs that you may see in rural areas. They are usually customized with different wheels, shocks and exhaust systems. The wheels on a racing ATV are narrower to give it more speed and turning ability. The wheels are also upgraded to a lighter and stiffer aluminum alloy the reduce weight and handle impact from jumps. The shocks are one of the most important upgrades because there are many jumps on a typical course. The shocks need to give enough to absorb impact with minimal speed loss. They also must be stiff enough to maintain the vehicles integrity on tight corners. Loose shocks could result in a rollover if the turn is too tight.

Many riders are constantly tweaking their shocks to find the perfect combination to maximize their speed and safety.

The exhaust is simply made up of a more free flowing muffler and intake to move air through the engine much quicker. This altered exhaust results in more noise output, but it can significantly raise the torque of an ATV. My yamaha raptor 250r has this type of exhaust.

ATVs for hunting and camping are very similar overall. They have wide tires for good off-road traction. Hunters will sometime use a stricter muffler, so that the ATV is not so loud. Both types of ATVs will have extra storage compartments and rails on the front and back to tie down their gear. A large capacity fuel tank is always a good option for extended trips.

Extra gas cans are also a common on such ATVs. One of the best options to ensure that you do not get stuck in the wilderness is a front mounted winch. This is primarily for dragging the ATV out of deep mud or sand in case it gets stuck. The winch cable can be fastened around a nearby tree, and it will pull the vehicle toward the tree.

Atv Ramps For Packing And Traveling With Your Atv
ATV ramps are helpful when you are trying to load items onto an ATV or pack for a trek. The ramps vary in size and height and you will want to look around to find the best one for your ATV needs. There are many websites, stores, and catalogs devoted to selling these ramps. Make sure to take some time to research the different sites, shops, and catalogs in order to get the best price, best quality, and the best one for your needs. Ramps vary in price but are typically inexpensive, such as usually under one hundred dollars. There are also various styles of ramps so research before settling on one kind.

A lot of the ATV ramps can be folded up. Some can be folded up twice and some will be folded up three times. The amount of folding will probably depend on how much space you have for the ramp and where you will be storing it. There are also some models that do not fold at all. Keep in mind that you will need more space to store one that does not fold. The more folds it has the less space it will take up where you are storing it.
The ones that fold two times range in price from around seventy to eighty dollars. These are good for people that have enough space to store a ramp that will only fold down the middle. The ramps that fold three times are about eighty dollars and will fit in a lot of spaces as once they are folded they will take up very little space. The ones that do not fold are by far the cheapest but keep in mind you will need to make sure you will have enough space to store the ramp. The price for the ones that do not fold is around fifty dollars.

When you need a ramp for your ATV head to the internet, an ATV store, or a catalog that sells ATV accessories and shop around. This will guarantee that you will get the cheapest price and the best product for your money. If you get a good deal on a ramp you will be spending under one hundred dollars. You may pay more if you want a specialized ramp. Keep in mind how much space you have to put the ramp away when you are not using it or when you go on trips.
